The Presenter: Roland Johnson

Is a passionate, self-confessed "gearhead" who's drawn to iron. But that magneticImpulse isn't just for power tools - he's been known to cling to old hand tools as well.

A professional woodworker for more than 40 years, Johnson left the pro world to work in his home shop; a semi-retired state that allows him to build whatever suits his mood.

He's been a contributing editor to Fine Woodworking magazine for 14 years now, often being the go-to guy for tool tests and evaluations.

He is the author of Automotive Woodworking (Motor books 2001) and The Complete Illustrated Guide to Band saws (Taunton Press 2010).

When not in his shop, you may find him mowing his grass, making his sports cars go faster, tending his Vegetable garden, or at a bluegrass festival somewhere in the Midwest with his wife, JoAnn.

Demonstrations will provide information useful to all skill level woodworkers, novice and expert alike.

Rollie will discuss what attributes make a good bandsaw, how to set up guides accurately and quickly, and thoroughly explain blade technology and how to choose the best blade for any sawing situation. All considered this should be a thorough look at how to set up a bandsaw for accurate resawing and general use.

Rollie will discuss the basics of bench planes, how to find and buy good used planes, how to rehabilitate a vintage plane, and using a plane. Card scrapers are frequently partnered with bench planes for refining surfaces, and Rollie has a dead-easy, foolproof method for achieving a great burr that will be a hit with woodworkers who struggle with those little pieces of steel.

Dull tools are frustrating to use and can rob you of some of the joy of woodworking. In his own shop Rollie tackles this issue with sandpaper glued to granite blocks to sharpen

Planes Irons and Chisels.

A honing guide keeps angles accurate and makes sharpening faster and more precise. The system is relatively inexpensive, and simple to set

up and use. Rollie describes this as a back-to-basics system that can achieve results that will rival, or beat, any sharpening system. Time permitting; Rollie will also delve into creating a portable sharpening station, one of the best additions to any workshop.

Rollie has developed a finishing procedure using shellac and varnish that is quickly and easily hand applied and yet be durable for most furniture projects, especially case goods. The complete finish takes about 15 minutes to apply and is usable as quickly as the varnish cures. Surface preparation (according to Rollie the most important aspect of finishing) will be included.

Rollie prefers audience interaction rather than monologue as a teaching style; so come prepared with questions and a willingness to roll your sleeves up and participate in his demonstrations. Time permitting, Rollie will discuss other subjects if interest.
